Why does the New Yorker Caption Contest even exist?

With maybe a .01% exception rate, the entries for the New Yorker Caption Contest are so harshly unfunny and unsophisticated, that it really detracts from the publication as a whole. Not only is it a waste of a page (automatic skip), but it's bound to test the fortitude of the smarter readership, as to what is worth being affiliated with such bush-league wit. Why do they keep it going?Why does the New Yorker Caption Contest even exist?
for the obvious reasons in that





a) they think the answers ARE funny


or


b) it gets more readership.
