Why do radio and TV stations caption ';life'; when the repeat the story?

I thought ';Life'; meant that it is being broadcast lLife. But once the same piece is repeated, it is not ';life'; anymore!

Isn't there a better word for prerecorded items?

I know there are several time zones, so it is not feasible to

broadcast ';life'; except in a National Emergency. Why do radio and TV stations caption ';life'; when the repeat the story?
The word is ';live'; and I've never noticed this to be a particular problem. It mostly occurs with tape-delayed broadcasting...such as when the show is live on the east coast of the USA, but then is delayed for prime-time broadcast on the west coast.
